Canada's real estate sector plays a vital role in meeting national climate goals, especially as climate change drives more extreme weather. Given that the majority of buildings are expected to remain in use at least until 2050, retrofitting is essential to reduce emissions. Each retrofit opportunity is critical, given the limited system upgrades that have been made over time. Achieving a decarbonized building sector will require collaboration across professions and adaptation to evolving regulations and technologies.
To support this initiative, The Purpose Accelerator sought to characterise the barriers and opportunities in the deep retrofit market by leveraging stakeholder input.
